This document describes Compassion’s understanding of the church and the implications of our commitment to the church. We also explore uses for the word “church,” including some modern-day perceptions and a historical reviewof the word’s biblical uses. The English word “church” originated from the Greek term ecclesia, which was used in the ancient secular world to refer to “a gathering of people” or “an assembly.” This document describes Compassion’s understanding of Jesus’ intent for His ecclesia — a dynamic local community of disciple-making people empowered by the Holy Spirit.
